Philip Manandu was among the political bigwigs from Ukambani in 1983.
The gifted orator and a master of Kamba language won the trust of many people in his region and county at large then.
He was a member of the then ruling party KANU.
In 1983 general election, Manandu silenced Kalonzo Musyoka in Kitui North Parliamentary seat.
In what was called “a race to death” that Kalonzo thought his education would give him an upper hand, Philip Manundu garnered unbelievable votes which surprised many including the former Vice President.
He got more than 15,000 votes as compared to other contestants.
Manandu's political career ended in pain after he was shot on January 15, 1985, at 5.00pm.
He was shot by an administration police officer under unclear circumstances.
Manundu died while serving as the Kitui MP.
He served in the position between 1979 and 1985.
Three other people died while scores sustained injuries during the incident.
Those who were shot dead by the police officer included trader Beatrice, the then Kaningo Primary school head teacher Mutangili Mwinzi and Kathina Mulingawa.
