Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has defended Nandi Governor Stephen Sang who has been in the spotlight after leading a section of Nandi residents in destroying tea crops in a tea plantation in Nandi Hills constituency.
Governor Sang on Friday while accompanied by his supporters descended on a 4-acre piece of land and destroyed the cash crop claiming that the land was public property and whoever had planted tea on the land was a land grabber.
Sang’s action sparked mixed reactions and it was reported that the police had launched a manhunt on him.
On Sunday evening, reports emerged that the youthful politician has been arrested but Murkomen has rubbished the claims.
According to Murkomen, Sang was working under the directive of the President and nobody has been arrested.
“I am told someone wants to arrest Governor Sang for demolishing structure/fixtures situated/growing in public land. That was a directive of the President and no public officer in national or county level was/has been arrested including in the Taj Mall & South End Mall,” Murkomen posted on facebook.
Sang claimed that the land was meant for construction of a cattle dip but the private developer grabbed it from the community.
The owners of the tea and the governor’s critics have faulted Sang for his actions citing there is an ongoing court case on the same.
