Addressing the press in Kakamega on Thursday, Governor Oparanya said that he will have to make a tough choice of leaving ODM in order to foster the much-needed Luhya unity which has been elusive.

“If leaders from this region decided to leave their parties and form one strong party that unites us, I will have to leave ODM,” said Oparanya.

“When we come together under one strong party, we will have a bargaining power, and that is my aim," he added.

Oparanya who is one of the two ODM’s deputy party leaders alongside his Mombasa counterpart Ali Hassan Joho, has been a firm believer in ODM ideals since joining the party ahead of the 2007 general elections when he was elected the Butere MP.

He is among the top and senior Western region leaders who have been supporting the opposition alongside Ford Kenya Party leader Moses Wetangula and Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi.

Mudavadi and Wetangula have both hinted at vying for Presidency in 2022.

On Thursday during the 15th anniversary of the death of former Vice President Michael Wamalwa Kijana in Kitale, Western leaders agreed to forge a united front in readiness for 2022 State House race.
