Traders operating at Keumbu market in Nyaribari Chache constituency, Kisii County have threatened to stage demos on Monday next week over the deplorable state of the facility.
The traders on Friday claimed that Kisii County government has failed to improve the state of the market by building good toilets and drainage systems.
They said their grievances have fallen on deaf ears and the only op[tion they have is to hold a peaceful protest.
"Governor James Ongwae and his Deputy Joash Maangi are lazy in their offices while we are suffering at the market. County askaris and revenue collecting officers are all over harassing us to pay taxes but improving the market has become hard. We will take to the streets on Monday if the county government will not address the problems we have been raising," said Elizabeth Moraa, a tomato vendor.
Richard Okeyo accused the county government of prioritizing the collection of taxes but, poor in solving problems facing traders who are the major stakeholders in the county.
"We pay daily taxes to the county government but, there are no toilets for us to use. We want to know where Governor Ongwae and his Deputy Mr. Maangi takes our money we pay as taxes. Not even police officers are going to stop us from protesting," he said.
Charles Kimonge, a hawker said they are ready for teargas on Monday.
"We will not fear teargas because the county government of Kisii led by Governor Ongwae has failed us. We need good drainage systems at the market for free flow of water and good toilets for us to use while at work," he stated.
