Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has condemned the harassment of civilians who staged anti-corruption demonstrations on Tuesday in Nairobi.
This is after anti-riot police lobbed tear gas to disperse them as they attempted to force their way into the Central Business District from Uhuru Park.
In the process, one protester identified as Beatrice Waithera Maina was arrested and detained at Central Police Station.
Kabogo wondered why police used force on the peaceful demonstrators, yet they stayed away during the swearing-in of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga on January 30, 2018.
"It’s ok for Raila to be sworn in as people’s president but wrong for Kenyan public to have peaceful demonstrations. Interesting...which of the two is unconstitutional?" he posed.
In a post on his social media account, the former county boss asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to crack the whip on the police commander who "ordered" Maina's arrest, which he termed as unconstitutional.
"That’s a violation of her constitutional rights and whoever ordered it must be apprehended and charged before a court of law. While taking oath of office PORK (President Of Republic of Kenya) swore, “.. that I will obey, preserve, protect and defend this Constitution of Kenya..." Kabogo tweeted.
Maina was released on a police a bond on Tuesday night after relentless human rights activists led by Boniface Mwangi camped at the police station demanding her freedom.
