National Environment Management Authority (Nema) Board Chairman John Konchella has warned the Mombasa Water and Sewerage Company against environmental pollution.
Speaking on Tuesday at the launch of Rapid Results Initiative on effluent discharge in Nairobi, Konchella said that Mombasa will be their next destination after cleaning the mess in Nairobi.
“From Nairobi next region is Mombasa, and we put Mombasa Water and Sewerage Company on notice. Our inspectors are in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru to make sure this initiative is adhered to,” Konchellah said as reported by Baraka FM.
On its part, Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company has been given seven days to stop polluting Nairobi River.
Nema Director General Mr Geoffrey Wahungu promised to punish all officers of any corporate that violets the Environmental Management and Coordination Regulations, 2006 and the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA).
“You are therefore directed to stop any further discharge of effluent into Nairobi River within seven days failure to which Nema will take further action including prosecution without any further reference to you,” Mr Wahungu said in the letter dated May 6, 2019 as quoted by the Nation.
Other targeted areas include South Lake, North Eastern, North Lake, Central, North Rift and South Rift.
