First born to the first Vice President of the republic Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, followed by Raila, Oburu has simply been through it all, and despite his father being slightly rich during his childhood days, the duo would trek for 5 kilometers from home to Maranda Primary School and back.

Since Raila who seems to have overshadowed his brother politically is more popular, many things about Oburu, who remains the family chief remain unknown.

A good example is his lifestyle, with very few people being aware that despite all the money he seems to have, the amount he has made for himself and the one he inherited from his father in 1996, the former Bondo Member of Parliament does not take alcohol.

In an interview with the Daily Nation in 2006, Oburu who admitted having been an alcohol lover who also took hard stuff alongside lots on roast meat (Nyama Choma) in the past said that he had stopped the habit for health reasons.

The decision followed realization that he had contracted diabetes and hypertension, pushing him the soda and strict diet way.

He also reported having adopted a strict routine that saw him only eat at home.

"I used to eat a lot of nyama choma, drink beer and hard stuff. But I had to stop all that when I became diabetic and hypertensive. I then started taking red wine because it is good for the heart. But I have since stopped and I now take diet coke and soda water. I now eat diet prescribed by a doctor. That is why I eat at home because my wives know what is best for me." he told the paper.
