The move follows national government's efforts to nab illegal sugar containing mercury, and persons smuggling the contraband across the country.

Speaking at the company, KISCOL Relations officer Matthias Mutua confirmed that the government closed down the warehouses following a visit to the Kwale county-based company by the National Assembly Committee on Labour that sought to ascertain the origin of the sugar at the factory.

He said all the warehouses contained over 100 thousand bags of sugar during the closure and that the company will resume operations on Monday next week upon completion of tests on the sugar by experts.

The $200 million (Sh17.8 billion) privately-owned sugar processing facility was established in 2007 to manufacture and market affordable, locally grown sugar.
