Former Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology Vice Chancellor Prof Fredrick Otieno is dead.
Prof Otieno had been undergoing treatment at Tophill hospital in Eldoret, before suffering a stroke on Tuesday morning, Citizen Digital reports.
Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya is said to be among top leaders who visited him at his hospital bed on Sunday.
The distinguished don was admitted at the Intensive Care Unit until his death on Tuesday morning.
Since leaving Masinde Muliro in 2016, Otieno has been facing corruption related cases which are being pressed by EACC.
His lawyer Martin Oloo on Tuesday chastised critics and instead blamed them for allegedly ‘hounding’ his client.
“Those who know his battles with some Council members of Masinde Muliro including one member born in Western, and some staff of Masinde Muliro know how he was unfairly hounded out of office,” the lawyer said.
He further lamented that the former VC was harassed with no charges being preferred, convicted in the court of the public, without being given a chance to defend himself.
“For over a year, he had no income. As a full professor of the university, his salary was stopped without justification, let alone the fact that his contract as a VC, which had a renewal clause terminated unfairly,” the lawyer added.
His body has since been transferred to Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu awaiting burial.
His death comes a day after Kenya lost another don, Prof Otieno Odek.
