Embattled former National Lands Commission (NLC) chairman Mohamed Swazuri has been arraigned at a Milimani court to answer to alleged graft charges.

Swazuri is appearing before Milimani Chief Anti-Corruption Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi.

The former NLC boss and other suspects are facing charges of alleged fraudulent land compensation for construction of Mombasa Southern Bypass and Kipevu New High Terminal link Road in October 2013.

Swazuri is alleged is to have made irregular payments to Tornado Carriers Ltd for compulsory acquisition of land in Mombasa.

The suspects are also facing charges of conspiracy to commit economic crime, abuse of office, financial misconduct, money laundering and unlawful acquisition of public property.

On Wednesday, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji approved charges against Swazuri and other suspects.

Haji in a statement said there is enough evidence to sustain charges against the suspects.

Swazuri and other suspects spent the night at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) police station prior to their arraignment in court today.
