One person died on the spot on Thursday morning when their vehicle overturned while trying to escape a police chase.
Kilifi South OCPD Joseph Muriuki confirmed the incident which happened along the Kilifi-Kaloleni highway at Mavueni.
"The over-speeding vehicle lost control and overturned, where one occupant died on the spot, the driver who was injured is in custody," said Mr. Muriuki.
The deceased was in company of two and they were allegedly ferrying marijuana from Voi town to unknown destination.
Their car was suspected by police officers in Voi who then alerted other officers in Mariakani. However, the suspects ignored the police order after they were flagged down at Mariakani check point.
Officers from Mariakani decided to alert Kilifi officers while giving the suspects a high-speed chase. Unfortunately their car overturned after it lost control.
The suspects were reportedly transporting around 10 bags of bhang with each bag containing 700 rolls. The bhang is said to cost about Sh2.1 million.
"Upon searching the vehicle, it was confirmed that it had ten bags of bhang each with 700 rolls estimated to cost around 2.1 million going with the street value estimation," added Mr. Muriuki.
More investigations into the matter are being carried out by the police.
