With the opposition team seemingly divided, Mr Odinga mobilised his colleagues behind Kibaki under Narc, a move that handed independent party KANU a major defeat in which President Uhuru Kenyatta lost during his first stab at the presidency.

On Wednesday during an interview at KTN, Odinga said he only regrets circumstances behind the major pronouncement that propelled Kibaki to victory.

He said: "No Tony Gachoka, I don’t regret. But I regret the circumstances that led to this. Kibaki had suffered a very severe accident. So I ran the campaign. The captain was wounded but the game had to continue," Raila told Mr Gachoka of Point Blank.

With Kibaki hospitalised in London following a tragic accident, Odinga led vicious campaigns along with Michael Wamalwa and Charity Ngilu which handed President Daniel Moi's party a major defeat.

But the duo parted ways in 2005 following a referendum on constitutional changes which saw Odinga's team beat President Mwai Kibaki. Mr Kibaki dismissed Odinga's faction from the cabinet.

In 2007, the two faced each other in a closely contested election that brought about chaos.

The international community forced them to work together under the Grand Coalition government.

In 2013, Raila lost to Mr Uhuru Kenyatta, who was Kibaki's opponent in 2002. Mr Kibaki did not declare support to Raila.
