As the discussion on the proposed regulation of churches continues, a legislator allied to Musalia Mudavadi led Amani National Congress (ANC) has weighed in on the matter.
Teso North MP Oku Kaunya opined that the cry from the faithful on the mushrooming of churches should be listened to.
He said that most of the proprietors of the modern-day churches are only out to benefit themselves and not preaching the gospel as should be the case.
"To curtail theft from the public by those people peddling and hovering in the name of being men of God, I fully support the proposals to regulate churches, activities and public based operations by the government," he wrote in his Facebook page.
He further stated that there are people who use churches as conduits to hide their ill-gotten wealth which makes the church a den of corruption.
"The government must regulate the industry since it has become a den of corruption, extortion and other social evils in the society," said the MP
The debate on church regulation has since been opposed by a section of church leaders across the country.
Neno Evangelism's Pastor James Maina Ng'ang'a criticised the proposal made by journalist Linus Kaikai.
Kigumo MP Muturi Kigano has since tabled a motion in Parliament asking the Attorney General Paul Kihara to draft a bill aimed at regulating churches within the next 90 days.
