President Uhuru Kenyatta has said his administration has accommodated more women than previous governments, adding that he's keen to expand their involvement in the running of government.
At Vancouver, Canada on Monday in the ongoing Women Deliver 2019 conference, Uhuru asked world leaders to give women an enabling environment, arguing that they can deliver just like men.
"We need to make the society understand that women are as capable as men. We have to create an enabling environment and the opportunity for them to serve," Uhuru said.
According to him, he has given more women positions of authority and power. Previously, he said, the Kenyan government was patriarchal in nature.
“We have given women positions of power and authority. We are giving them opportunities to hold positions previously held by men," the Head of State added.
He said that he's keen to ensure the two-third gender rule is passed in parliament. The bill has stagnated after MPs failed to raise quorum on the matter.
In the Gender Rule, the constitution of Kenya states that no gender can take more than one-third of state appointments. Parliament is yet to enact the law.
“My government is keen on the involvement of women in leadership roles. We have advocated very strongly for the two-thirds gender bill. We will not relent, we will keep pushing this agenda," added Uhuru.
Some of the women who sit in cabinet include Prof Margaret Kobia of Public Service, Farida Karoney of Lands, Sicily Kariuki of Health and Raychelle Omamo of Defense.
