Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waititu is a politician under siege owing to the alleged suspicious county spendings unearthed by the Senate Public Accounts Committee.
Waititu is on the spotlight over the alleged Sh2.5 billion abnormal expenditures incurred by his administration.
The abnormal budget allocation and alleged spendings now put Waititu in a bad political situation even as he seeks to defend his seat in the 2022 election.
With the 2022 succession politics taking shape, Waititu could find it difficult marketing his agenda for re-election as governor if he fails to answer to serious audit questions.
Governor Waititu could also be dragged into the courts if it emerges that his government failed to prudently utilise funds allocated to it.
Already a section of leaders among them former Governor William Kabogo wants the DCI, EACC and DPP to launch a probe against Waititu.
Should he be dragged to the courts, Waititu will have dented his chances of being re-elected in 2022.
Governor Waititu could also find it hard selling his re-election agenda after associating himself with the 'Tanga Tanga' faction of the Jubilee Party.
This could work against him should majority of Mt Kenya politicians refuse to back Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 presidential ambition.
Governor Waititu has also been under sharp criticism over some of the projects he has initiated among them the 'Kaa sober' rehabilitation programme, as a section of residents feels dissatisfied with his development agenda.
The Kiambu governor has, however, defended himself and his government against critics who he accuses of plotting for his political downfall.
It will be interesting to watch how Waititu gets himself out of the mess and how he moves forward ahead of the 2022 general election.
