Garissa is among 13 counties where drought and hunger alarm has been raised.
According to a status and response report by the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), drought is worsening in Garissa, Mandera, Isiolo and Marsabit.
Other counties facing drought, hunger and starvation are Nyeri, West Pokot, Kilifi, Samburu, TanaRiver, Baringo and Laikipia.
The Drought Management Authority says it has put in place mitigation measures to cushion residents from hunger.
According to NDMA, the government has started the distribution of aid to the affected Kenyans.
The Authority says it is targeting schools with aim of keeping students in class.
Garissa has in recent years been hit with deadly drought and starvation leading to loss of human and animal life.
A food security team comprising of Kenya Food Steering Group and officials from the Garissa County government is touring the county to assess the drought.
According to Garissa NDMA coordinator, Abdinoor Dubow, the team will visit Balambala, Fafi, Hulugho, Ijara, Lagdera and Daabab.
“We will advise on the appropriate response mechanisms once we compile our report,” he told journalists on Friday.
