A Moi University student on Friday pleaded guilty to stealing money from her mother to spend with her boyfriend in Eldoret town.
The student Cynthia Cherop was accused of stealing Sh70,000 from her mother’s accounts at Barclays and National Bank, money which she allegedly spent with her boyfriend, Josephat Ng'ang'a, also a student from the institution.
She pleaded guilty to the charge. However, Cherop told the court that she bought second-hand clothes for her business denying claims of spending the money with the boyfriend.
The duo was captured in a CCTV footage installed in Barclays Bank displayed withdrawing the money from an ATM machine.
Ng'ang'a, Cherop's boyfriend was also accused of creating disturbance by threatening to beat up Cherop’s mother, Ms Milka Chebosisi Sitati.
He denied the charge and was released on a cash bail of Sh30,000.
Cherop’s furious mother gave the court a go-ahead to jail her daughter after she pleaded guilty before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi.
Two of Cherop’s uncles, however, pleaded with the court to release her, saying they wanted her to continue with her college studies.
Cherop cried out begging for forgiveness pleading that it was her first criminal offence.
State prosecutor Solomon Naulikha asked the court to treat the accused as a first offender, a plead that was not opposed, the court adjourned the sitting giving orders that Cherop serves probation.
She has been remanded until August 2 awaiting a probation report.
