On September 25, 2015, Ruiru Member of Parliament Esther Gathogo attempted to strip naked after former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama linked Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

While addressing her supporters in Katongora village in Ruiru, Kiambu County, the lawmaker said she was ready to walk naked following the remarks she termed derogatory.

“I heard Muthama say CS Anne Waiguru got her ministerial position because of her closeness with the President,” she said in anger.

Gathogo said male legislatures have no mandate to intimidate their female counterparts in parliament, adding that Muthama had not only embarrassed himself but also the people who elected him.

“No, women don’t have to engage intimately with men to qualify for respectable government positions,” she retorted.

The firebrand lawmaker said she was ready to walk for kilometers without clothes to prove the then-senator wrong.

“If Muthama thinks we do that to be rewarded with top positions, and that women are different, I will strip and show him that we are not any different,” Gathogo added.

The remarks elicited mixed reactions from different factions.

The MP, however, did not walk naked as she had threatened to.
