Popular ‘Kieleweke ‘ faction within Jubilee party has accused their ‘Tanga Tanga ‘ counterparts of starting 2022 succession politics earlier.
Led by Nyeri Town member of parliament Ngunjiri Wambugu and Cherangany’s Johnson Kutuny, the legislators who are opposed to Deputy President William Ruto’s rise to the presidency have maintained that it is not yet time for 2022 succession politics.
Speaking at ACK Good Samaritan church in Kasarani on Sunday, the leaders urged those who are already campaigning for the presidency to respect the president and start their campaigns at right time.
"Why are people busy moving around the country campaigning for the presidency yet it is not vacant? Let us respect the President and support him. At the right time, let those interested in various seats conduct their campaigns” Ngunjiri said as quoted by the Daily Nation.
Ngunjiri further revealed their agreement with President Kenyatta on 2022 campaigns.
According to the legislator, President Kenyatta had asked the MPs during their first meeting after elections to serve Kenyans for four years before embarking on 2022 campaigns.
“In our first Parliamentary Group meeting at State House, President Kenyatta told us to work for Kenyans for four years; to stop politics. But within six months, some of our colleagues had started campaigning,” he said.
Ngunjiri's sentiments come at the time when the two factions continue to cause division in Jubilee party.
William Ruto and his group have been crisscrossing the country launching development projects and attending fundraising in what has been termed as early preparations for the coming general elections.
