The challenge of handling plastic and glass waste may soon come to an end after a group of Moi University students invented a way to convert the waste into useful forms.
According to Edwin Khakali, a fourth-year student studying Business and Economics, Finance option, the idea behind their invention is to help come up with a solution to plastic and glasses waste management.
Khakali, the chairman of the university's Enactus group says with their invention, waste from plastic and glasses can be recycled into tables and building blocks.
"As a group, we decided to come up with the idea due to a lot of organic and inorganic waste being dumped everywhere leading to blockage of drainage systems that subsequently cause diseases such as cholera among others," said the student.
He now hopes that their idea can get support from government and embraced a better environment.
"We melt plastic and mix it with crushed glasses which in turn are used to make a variety of products such as pavement blocks, fencing blocks, interlocking blocks among other products," said Khakali.
The cost of producing the blocks, according to the students are cheap compared to the existing means of producing the other normal blocks. This is because glasses and plastic waste materials are easily available and for free.
As the students look at the possibility of actualizing their invention, they say the only challenge would be how to produce the blocks and tables in large scale as it would require a huge capital to purchase machines needed.
They are also looking at ways they will minimize on gas produced during the melting of the plastic and glasses waste.
