A woman has been sentenced to eight years in jail for planning to kill her son.
Appearing before Kakamega Chief Magistrate Bildad Ochieng' Halima Sheillah Bwakali pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to murder her son.
The court heard how the accused forced her four-year-old boy to consume a toxic substance at their home in Khisa North, Kwisero Sub County on December 23, 2018.
The court was told that the boy escaped death by a whisker after the mother forced her to ingest diaxonal poison.
The accused also pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to kill herself following a confrontation with her mother Ruth Auma who questioned her drinking habit.
In his ruling, Justice Ochieng' condemned the woman for turning against the person she was expected to take care of, condemning her to prison.
"Her attempt to kill the defenceless child as well as trying to commit suicide to escape the punishment should not be taken lightly.
She was expected to show care for her child, but she turned out to be his tormentor. It is only by God’s grace that the child survived the poison,” he was quoted by the Standard.
The prosecution said that the 26-year-old attempted suicide after her mother ordered her out of her (mother) house.
