He may be facing opposition from rivals within the Jubilee party, but Deputy President William Ruto may have foreseen this quite early.
As a result, he made early preparations for the big day, the day he will actually be crowned as the president of the Republic of Kenya.
These moves are:
1. Formation of a single party within the Jubilee coalition
During the 2013 elections, many parties constituted the Jubilee coalition that eventually won the elections. However, on the run up to 2017 general elections, the Jubilee coalition dissolved all parties and formed one strong Jubilee Party. The idea behind the formation of this one party was to unite the country and avoid multiplicity of parties during the elections.
A keen eye will see that DP Ruto wanted a strong party of unity, such that it will be difficult for the party to front two candidates.
2. He has many allies within Jubilee Party and government
Starting from the Senate, Ruto has a strong supporter in Kipchumba Murkomen, the Senate majority leader as well as the speaker Ken Lusaka. In parliament, he has Aden Duale, a staunch and indefatigable supporter of the Jubilee party, and was a member of Ruto’s party, United Republican Party (URP). Within the party, Ruto’s influence can be seen by the resignation of David Murathe, the vice-chairman.
3. He organized himself early
The statements being made by those opposing Ruto’s ambition to succeed President Kenyatta may have come in late. The man from Sugoi may have foreseen all these and put his men in key political positions, making it hard for him to be elbowed out. Jubilee party stalwarts slept on their jobs, blinded by the success of the 2017 elections while the self-proclaimed hustler was relentlessly making himself untouchable.
