Increase in bus fare in Kisii County has been blamed over the invasion of Boda boda riders.
Matatu operators while speaking in Kisii town on Monday claimed that riders have led to residents to boycott using Public Service Vehicles (PSVs).
“The number of residents using PSVs has gone down due to the increased number of Boda boda riders who at times charges cheap fares. As PSV operators we have double fare for those using our services to meet the daily target,” said David Onyuri.
Onyuri said threats from police officers that PSV operators overcharging passengers will be arrested and arraigned in court won’t work.
“Matiang’i won’t succeed in using police to harass us. Matatu business is currently doing badly because more residents have opted to use Boda bodas and for the few people we ferry we must charge reasonable fares for the sake of making profits,” he added.
Benjamin Moseti reiterated that bus fare won’t drop soon because the implementation of the new road rules is also expensive.
“Passengers will continue paying more while using matatus because the government is so demanding for the implementation of ‘Michuki rules’. The government needs to regulate Boda boda failure to which we will continue overcharging locals,” said Moseti.
