A secondary school student has committed suicide after his parents reportedly attempted to force him to repeat a class for the third time.
20-year-old Edward Abebo reportedly killed himself in Cherangany Sub-County , Trans Nzoia county after disagreeing with his parents on the issue.
The form four student at Taito Secondary School scored a D+ in his first Kenya Certificate of Secondary of Education, before scoring a C in last year's paper.
He was expecting to join university when parents demanded that he resits the paper in pursuit of better results, leading to an argument and ultimately suicide.
"The boy was determined to join university but we were shocked when he took his own life after he reportedly disagreed with his parents," Vickford Bundi, a neighbour, told the Tuesday Standard.
Edward is said to have doused himself in petrol at his parents' home.
However, such incidents are not new in the area, as this becomes the second in a span of two months.
In February, Escrivia Monari, a form one student doused himself in paraffin in a bush around their home, leading to his death.
