A festive season is a time where families and friends come together to have fun.
Different communities have their different traditions and practises that bring them together during such a period.
In the Kalenjin land, the festive season is a time where these three very special ceremonies take place;
Initiation ceremony (tumdo)
This is a ceremony where the boys' transition from childhood to adulthood. It happens after going through a secret ritual. After the ritual, the community meet to celebrate those who successfully go through it. During such celebrations, traditional drinks like busaa and mursik are readily available. Pre-wedding (Koito)
As boys are celebrated, girls also are given their chance to present their potential husbands to parents. This event mostly happens during the festive season among the Kalenjins.
Pre-wedding (Koito in the Kalenjin community) is the event that acts as a farewell to the girl. After Koito, the girl is officially married, she is allowed to live with the husband with or without conducting a wedding. However, in communities that are Christians, it is only after the wedding that they can live together as husband and wife but will still.
Wedding (Arusit)
Most weddings for the Kalenjin community happen during the festive season. It is an event that brings together friends and families from both the wife and husbands side.
