The Kalenjin people are renowned for many things, notably athletics. Even then, that’s not the only thing that makes a remarkable tribe in Kenya.
The Kalenjin are a close-knit tribe and for the following reasons;
Value in family
Kalenjin people are a close-knit family. We do not have cousins but rather brothers. We have fathers rather than uncles. Of course, we are a paternal tribe. As nature has it, not every one person’s parent is well to do. With everyone being family, there’s no question that a well to do family within the extended structure will step in to help.
The spirit of giving
There’s an unspoken obligation around giving. It is your duty to help someone in need. We believe that someone lacks today, tomorrow is a mystery. The person may not give back, but we’ll still help if one day they find themselves in a position of lack.
Unity
You see this in every election year where the Kalenjin have a unanimous decision when backing a leader. It may not be a hundred per cent but the majority of people are united towards a political cause. And this unity is not displayed in politics alone but in social aspects.
Tradition
The Kalenjin places high value in traditions such as circumcision and marriage. Although the two have been watered down by modernity, it is still valued. It is a general rule that one must be circumcised in order to be called a man, and therefore legible for marriage. A married man is valued more than one who isn’t.
