Deputy President William Ruto is among top politicians who are eyeing to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in the much anticipated 2022 general election.
President Kenyatta is serving his last term in office and is expected to endorse Ruto’s candidature as per the alleged agreement they signed in 2013.
As 2022 election nears, DP Ruto is strategizing on how to ascend to power despite the growing criticism against him from a section of politicians across the divide.
A section of politicians led by former Jubilee Party Vice chairperson David Murathe claims that Ruto is not fit to succeed Uhuru in 2022.
Murathe has even vowed to move to the Supreme Court to block DP Ruto’s candidature in 2022 presidential polls even as Siaya Senator James Orengo push for Ruto’s removal from office over alleged misconduct.
As DP Ruto fights his critics and stamps his authority ahead of 2022 general election, here are veteran politicians who are likely to be his running mate in 2022.
1. Mike Sonko
The Nairobi Governor is a close ally of DP Ruto and is among politicians who have declared support for him (Ruto) in 2022.
Sonko has been quoted claiming that some people are plotting to frustrate Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid.
The Nairobi governor has also been quoted saying that he might not seek re-election in 2022.
Ruto could easily pick Sonko as his running mate because of the influence he has in city politics and especially among the youth.
2. Kalonzo Musyoka
The Wiper Party leader is also eyeing to succeed President Kenyatta in 2022.
Kalonzo says he has waited for long and that 2022 is his time to ascend to power.
The former Vice President enjoys a cordial political relationship with DP Ruto and chances of the two partnering in 2022 are high.
Kalonzo has been quoted saying he is ready to partner with like-minded politicians and parties in 2022.
3. Hassan Joho
The Mombasa Governor is a critic of DP Ruto.
The two politicians are not seeing eye to eye and have often engaged in ugly public barbs.
But as they say in politics there are no permanent enemies.
Ruto and Joho could strike a partnership that that could surprise Kenyans ahead of 2022.
4. Musalia Mudavadi
The Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader is also eyeing to succeed Uhuru in the 2022 general election.
Mudavadi and Ruto don’t enjoy good political relationships but political circumstances can make them work together in 2022.
5. Aden Duale
The Garissa Township MP is a close ally of DP Ruto.
Duale is among politicians advocating for Ruto’s presidency in 2022.
The National Assembly Majority leader’s influence in North Eastern could be a plus for Ruto in 2022.
A section of North Eastern politicians has been calling on the DP Ruto to pick Duale as his running mate.
