The maize scandal and the new prices set by the government has continued to stir up a hot debate in the North Rift region, the country's food basket.

Elected leaders have continued to politicize the maize issue even as a section of legislators from the region has sworn to reject the new prices of Sh2,300 for every 90-kilogram bag of maize.

The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) is also in trouble for failing to pay genuine farmers who supplied their produce to them in 2017 yet unverified suppliers were paid millions of shillings.

This is even as the amount of maize they supplied remain unrealistic and exaggerated.

It has now emerged that the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) is investigating a number of companies, farmers, cartels and NCPB officials over the scam.

Deputy President William Ruto’s farm, Koilel Farm limited, allegedly registered under the names of his wife Rachael Chebet and his son Nick Ruto is also said to on the spot for being paid a huge amount of money.

The farm is said to have been paid Sh20.8 million for supplying 11,844 bags of maize to the Eldoret NCPB depot.

Money paid to Koilel farm and the number of bags allegedly supplied to NCPB remain questionable as Ruto’s farm in Moiben is said to be 430 acres only.

When he appeared on NTV's Sidebar show last week, Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny had also claimed that the DP's farm received payments for supplying maize to NCPB.

"Koilel Farm, just Google it. Look at the pictures, it's owned by the DP and he can't deny it. It's one of the companies used by cartels to syphon money from NCPB," said Kutuny.
