Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga is one of the politicians whose stay in office after the concluded General elections can be attributed to luck and God’s grace.
In his case, Rasanga can forever celebrate the fact that area Senator James Orengo decided to defend his seat in what seems like a postponement of his ambition for a bigger post.
Rasanga would have faced the worst defeat of his life should Orengo have announced his bid for the higher seat and had no chance against the opposition leader Raila Odinga's number one confidant.
Using his popularity in the region, some of which emanates from his closeness to the former Premier, clinching the seat would have been a very easy task.
This is evident in the Senatorial race where he successfully defended his seat without campaigning at all, while other candidates were busy traversing the county.
This would have blown-off the little known Rasanga as Orengo would have beaten him in the party primaries, forcing him to go on an independent ticket.
And in a region where almost every person wants to be in Raila’s bandwagon, being his home turf and county of origin, he would have failed more than in the primaries due to the party issue.
Therefore, Rasanga remains lucky that Orengo never went for the top seat, as otherwise he would have been a casualty of the Senior Counsel's popularity.
