Germany's prolific forward Mesut Ozil delivered a shocker to the football world on Sunday after announcing his with-immediate-effect retirement from international football, citing racism and disrespectful treatment from DFB, the country's football authority.
In a statement posted on Twitter, Ozil revealed that his problems begun after he took a photo with Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
"I am German when we win, I am an immigrant when we lose," Ozil wrote.
The statement has elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans online.
Here is what football-loving residents of Garissa had to say:
"I stand with Ozil. The treatment he received from the DFB was disrespectful and racist," Kabul Omar says.
"Ozil deserves better from the Germans and not what he was subjected to. His decision to retire from international football was the right one," Haida Sahib says.
"I read the statement and tears formed in my eyes. No human being deserves that kind of treatment," Bule Mohamed says.
"Ozil is one of Germany's best players. His retirement is a blow to the national football team. They will surely regret it," Fakim Asman says.
