Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has claimed that he rejected offers to join the ruling Jubilee Party in the run-up to the 2017 general elections.
Speaking on Milele FM's Kivumbi Show on Tuesday, he said that he rejected calls to merge his party with the bigger Jubilee Party, but accepted to work with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The Maendeleo Chapchap (MCC) party chief added that the party opted to remain independent at a time when others were being folded.
However, he noted that as much as he believed and supported some of Uhuru's ideologies, he and his party remain in disagreement with a number of others.
"Hatujaingia Jubilee(we have not joined Jubilee), we refused, walikuja (they came), we said no. We said will remain independent but will support Uhuru's reelection and some of his policies. We are not in support of all his policies, they were not perfect," he said.
He expressed his commitment to remaining behind Uhuru and his government until the completion of his term in 2022.
Mutua also expressed confidence that he will realise his 2022 presidential bid, and will be the one to take over Uhuru's position as the next president.
He termed it time for the young generation to take over the mantle, saying that the older one has already built the foundation and its time to do the remaining job.
"We will support him up to 2022 as we take over," he added.
However, Mutua is likely to face stiff competition from Deputy President William Ruto and Amani National Congress (ANC) boss Musalia Mudavadi who is also keen on clinching the seat.
