President Uhuru Kenyatta has congratulated his Malawian counterpart Peter Mutharika after his reelection.
Mutharika retained the seat after beating his closest rival opposition leader Lazarus Chakwera with a small margin amid rigging claims.
Uhuru said that the reelection of Mutharika is a sign that the people of Malawi have confidence in his leadership
"On behalf of the People and the Government of the Republic of Kenya, I congratulate you on your re-election for a second term as the President of the Republic of Malawi," tweeted State House.
Uhuru, who is completing his second and final term in government said that the re-election of Mutharika also shows that Africa has continued to mature when it comes to matters of democracy.
He thanked that people of Malawi for standing with Mutharika during the electioneering period, and maintaining peace at the time differences in political ideologies between the two leaders played a central roles in the process.
"Your Excellency, your re-election by millions of Malawians in a peaceful election is not only a demonstration of the confidence the people have in your leadership, but also an attestation of Africa's maturing democratic profile,” Uhuru added.
Kenya and Malawi enjoy cordial economic, social and political ties.
