Kambas respect traditions.

A man is allowed to marry more than one wife among the Kamba community if tradition is anything to go by.

Muka Mukuu Farmers Cooperatives manager, John Musembi says in Kamba's tradition, a man’s first wife is tasked with choosing younger wives for him.

Musembi argues that the first wife earns a lot of respect from the second and other wives because of the role she plays in their lives.

The first wife, in other words, can say no to the husband if he wants to marry someone she believes is not right for him.

She will prefer a peaceful woman to be her co-wife.

The first wife decides most of the things in the family.

She is considered the pillar of strength in the family.

“This means that in Ukambani, the first wife was the powerful one hence well respected for she chose the younger wives for her husband,” argues Musembi.

However, things have apparently changed among Kambas.

Most Kamba men marry only one wife.

Hard economic times are among the reasons most men fear marrying several wives due to difficulties in taking care of their needs.
