The Ivorian legend holds the hope that Africans will taste success in such a global competition but he avers that approach has to change. He calls on CAF to relook at the strategies on how it wants African football to take matters football.

"Africa is going to be successful one day but we need to think again how we approach these big competitions. It's a big step back," Drogba told BBC Sports.

"I also think it is a chance for all the African teams and for the African Confederation maybe to reconsider the strategy and how we want to go forward. What do we want to do in the next World Cup? We have the potential, we have the money to develop, but we need more than that,"

"We need to have the consistency and the structure of the European teams and the South American teams. We are going to be successful one day but we need to think again about how we approach these big competitions," he added.

Senegal was the last African team to be knocked out on disciplinary record as they shared equal points, goal difference and matches won with Japan.

It had to be narrowed down to the number of yellow cards each team has amassed and the Africans had six while the Asians had four. Morocco, Egypt, Nigeria, and Tunisia were the other CAF representatives in Russia.
