Migori Governor Okoth Obado continues to be detained for over ten days now, after being accused of having a hand in the murder of slain Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.
Last month, the Governor denied charges of aiding the death of Sharon before Milimani High court Judge Jessie Lessit.
But the question being asked by many is what entails Obado’s survival tactic? Perhaps, the answer is silence.
Since the second term governor was arrested and arraigned in court, silence from Obado’s political camp, family and his lawyers has been deafening.
Since his arraignment, not a word has been heard from his family. Not even his dear wife Helen Obado.
Not a single word has been uttered by lawyers representing him outside court corridors. Many will remember how Cliff Ombeta, one of his lawyers was vocal about the governor’s innocence before he was charged last month.
In Migori, Obado’s deputy Nelson Mahanga has remained silent on the issue, and focused on running the county affairs.
We all know that commenting on a matter that is before a court of law can lead to contempt, but the fact remains that, giving a word of encouragement to a man facing murder charges cannot jeopardize the court process.
As things stand, Governor Obado and those close to him have settled on silence as a tactic. Whether it brings desirable results or not, is a matter of time.
