Reports suggest that the Prosecution will use the former chairman of the Kenyan Olympic Committee Kipchoge Keino as a state witness against former Sports Ministry officials who are accused of defrauding close to Sh55 million in the Rio Brazil Olympics in 2016.
A senior detective in the investigation said they had weighed on the need to safeguard the legend’s reputation after he agreed to stand in as a witness, in what is seen as a heavy political influence to have him set free.
The Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji had approved charges against Keino and his fellow former officials, and he was even ordered to present himself to court on Thursday ahead of the charges.
The Detective further said they would only charge former Sports CS Hassan Wario who is Kenya’s Ambassador to Austria, Patrick Nkabu and Haron Komen who had reported to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters.
They are expected to take the plea on Friday, but there was a push to release them on police bond ahead of the arraignment.
On Monday, Kenya's ambassador to Russia Richard Titus Ekai together with ex- NOCK officials Stephen Kiptanui Arap Soi and Francis Kinyili Paul were also charged over the Rio scandal.
They were however freed on Sh1 million cash bail as well as personal bonds of a similar amount after refuting the charge.
All the accused persons were ordered to surrender their travel documents
