The Senate speaker Kenneth Lusaka has opposed the move by some politicians in proposing the scrapping off of the Senate house of parliament.
The Speaker said the country should not be thinking about scrapping the house rather it should focus on strengthening it the more in order for it to execute its constitutional mandate effectively.
Lusaka was speaking on Citizen TV Daybreak show on Tuesday morning before parliament resumes after recess
"We should not be thinking about scrapping off the Senate rather strengthening it," Lusaka said.
The constitution of Kenya (2010) sets out the mandate of the Senate as a watchdog institution that will oversee devolution succeed at all spheres and defending the counties at all dispositions.
"The Senate is the watchdog of devolution and our role is to ensure we defend counties and the county governments," added Lusaka.
There has been heightened talk in the country on the need to reduce county governments and some arguments on doing away with the Senate which is the upper House as per the constitution.
While addressing a congregation at Chatham house in the united kingdom the deputy president came to the defence of the senate-house saying the country should also focus on strengthening the house and make it the powerful house since its mandate is citizen-driven.
Political leaders have remained divided on the matter of the constitutional changes.
