A Member of the County Assembly from Kisumu has hinted where what he calls Nyanza region's second city will be located.
Joachim Oketch who is the MCA for Kondele in Kisumu County says the lakeside's second city will be located in his ward and efforts to realize the same is underway.
He says he is transforming Kondele into "a city within a city" with a vibrant 24-hour economy.
"The promise to transform Kondele into a city within a city and to enhance 24-hour economy is soon becoming a reality," the MCA said on his social media account.
"The transformation of our walkways to modern ones and improvement of the drainage network is underway. This will be coupled with enough streetlights along the highway to enhance security. We must equally work together to change the 'negative narrative' attached to the name Kindele to transform it into a business hub that attracts investors."
He says the investment will be a major milestone as Kisumu prepares to host the Afro-Cities in 2021.
Although he is optimistic of transforming the ward's major town into a city status, Oketch remained silent on whether Kondele will meet the internationally set standards that qualify a town to become a city.
Among them is a supportive local economy, modern social infrastructure including a well-built road network as well as a population that runs into millions of people.
Kondele is a suburb outside Kisumu town. It is located along the busy Kisumu-Kakamega Highway.
