According to a public health officer, Joseph Muriuki, who was on the routine check on local butcheries in Garissa Town, unscrupulous butchers add quantities of sodium metabisulfite chemicals to preserve meat.

Speaking to this writer on Tuesday morning, Muriuki revealed that butchers were mixing the said chemicals with water and then sheared on overstored meat supplies to give it a fresh look.

"Meat consumers should be concerned on what they eat. I have received reports of poisonous chemicals added as a bleaching agent for stale meat," he said.

The revelations come at a time when health experts warn of increased cases of cancer across counties.

Cancer has widely been regarded as a lifestyle disease

Although the Ministry of Health and Kenya Bureau of Standard prohibits on the use of inorganic chemicals to preserve meat and other foods, retail outlets are still practising the vices thus endangering the lives of millions of Kenyans.
