Addressing the press flanked by other family members and their lawyer Charles Kanjama, he said that his son had been shot because he was involved in investigations into Governor Korane's 'fake' academic credentials.

"On behalf of the family, my son was shot because of investigating corruption issue, corruption that has hovered over the certificate qualification of the current sitting governor of Garissa," he said.

He said that his family did not feel safe after the shooting of his son.

His words add another twist to a fast-paced drama that continues to grip the Kenyan public.

David Mwai, a key suspect in the assassination attempt, died in controversial circumstances behind bars at the Parklands Police Station.

Police say that he committed suicide.
