Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho is definitely among the country's top politicians to watch out for ahead of the 2022 general elections.
Joho is serving for the second term as Mombasa governor and the constitutional requirements bar him from defending his seat.
He is now left with three options if he will want to continue serving the County residents.
He can be eligible to vie for Member of County Assembly (MCA), Member of Parliament or the Senatorial seat. However, in my opinion, his national status will not allow him to remain in county politics.
It is important to note that Joho is the deputy party leader for ODM party and a close confidant for party leader Raila Odinga.
Raila has not hinted on whether he will be vying for the presidential seat in 2022 although speculation is rife that the political veteran will be battling it out with deputy president William Ruto and other politicians who have interests in succeeding president Kenyatta.
In the event that Raila will not be on the ballot, then chances are high that Joho who is his deputy party leader will be on the ballot on an ODM party ticket.
Joho himself has openly displayed his interest in the presidential seat.
Even if Joho or Raila will lose in the presidential race, there is no doubt that the two will be strong opinion makers in the national government either by being the opposition leaders or joining the winning government as a result of their influence in Kenyan politics.
