Days after opposition leader Raila Odinga warned churches against accepting money from politicians, his closest ally and Siaya Senator James Orengo seems to be of the opposite opinion.

Orengo was on Sunday part of a team of politicians that attended a fundraiser at Rangala Catholic Church in Siaya, alongside a host of other politicians, ironically allied to Raila.

The celebrated lawyer and long-serving politician said that the funds raised at the function will be used to give the church a facelift.

He added in a tweet that they will be useful for renovations ahead of an important church celebration.

"After a Holy Mass at Rang'ala Catholic Church, I joined the faithfuls in a fundraiser in aid of renovations and face-lifting of the church. The church is preparing Centenary celebrations," he tweeted on Monday.

Also present was Ugunja lawmaker and Raila's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary of Political Affairs Opiyo Wandayi.

Speaking in Nyakatch, Kisumu county a fortnight ago, Raila told the church to reject donations and tithes from politicians, claiming that most of it are proceeds of corruption.

Ironically, the fundraiser also came a week after the Catholic Church leadership announced that politicians will not be allowed near its functions.

The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) is also in support of the calls to lock politicians out, in line with the purge on graft.
