Plant toxins naturally occur in plant foods as a way of protecting them from insects, animals and diseases. As such, most of the foods we eat daily may have these toxins which may be harmful to our health.
The good news is that, these toxins can easily be eliminated from food by heat treatment during cooking or drying.
Others can be eliminated by throwing away some parts of the fruit or vegetable, and that is why we have never died from them.
Here are some of the poisonous foods you probably have in your kitchen;
1. Fruits seeds from apples, peaches and plums
They contain hydrogen cyanide called prussic acid that can have a serious damage to your nervous system. Therefore, it is advisable not to take these seeds. However, you need large quantity to be poisoned.
2. Potatoes
They are a good source of carbohydrates for energy in our body. However, they contain glycoalkaloids found in the stems, leaves, sprouting potatoes and in potatoes that have stayed for too long. They can lead to cramping, diarrhea, confused headaches, coma or even death. Avoid potatoes with greenish appearance.
3.Cassavas
They have caused known deaths in Kenya. They contain cyanide that can cause death if consumed in large quantities that is why it is important to cook them before consumption.
4. Almonds
The bitter almonds contain cyanide that can still cause death to children and damage of organs in adults.
5. Unripe tomatoes
They contain alkali poisons that can bring stomach cramping. However, one needs to consume them in large quantities.
