Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga was born in 1947 in the then Kitui District.

Mutunga studied at Ithookwe primary before he proceeded to Kitui School for his Kenya Certificate of Education Exams.

Mutunga was the first student in Kenya’s history to score six points in the exams (A's in all subjects).

The retired CJ then joined Strathmore College for his A-Levels.

Mutunga later proceeded to study Law at the University of Nairobi (UoN), he graduated in the 1970's.

After his Bachelor’s Degree in Law, Mutunga proceeded to study Master’s Degree in Law at the University of Dare-Salaam.

Here are the top positions Mutunga later held after completing his studies:

1. Lecturer

Mutunga was a Constitutional Law lecturer at the University of Nairobi in the 1970's.

He formed the University Staff Union (USU) in 1979 that saw him exiled.

2. Founder- Kenya Human Rights Commission 

The former CJ founded KHRC while he was on exile in Canada.

He founded the human rights organization together with Law scholars Makau Mutua and Maina Kiai who were also in exile.

3. LSK's Chairperson

Mutunga served as the Law Society of Kenya's (LSK) Vice chairperson between 1991 and 1993.

4. Ford Foundation's programs officer

Mutunga was appointed as the Ford Foundation's programs officer in 2005.

He was later appointed as the organization's executive director in 2009.

5. Chief Justice 

Mutunga was appointed as the Chief Justice of Kenya in May after passing interviews where twelve applicants among them top Law scholars had applied for the position.

He served until June 16, 2016, when he quit after attaining the age of 70 years.

6. Commonwealth special envoy to Maldives 

After he retired as the CJ in 2016, Mutunga was appointed as special envoy to the Maldives by the Commonwealth Secretary-General.

The former CJ has since remained silent and is often spotted in local human rights events in the country.

There are speculations that Mutunga could opt to venture into politics in 2022 claims he has not yet responded to.
