A number of politicians from Garissa County are now calling on the national government to immediately open up the border areas between Kenya and Somalia.
Led by the Daadab Member of Parliament Dr Mohammed Dahiye, the leaders argue that opening the border between the two nations will ease transport of goods and movement along the borders of Liboi, Garissa, and Kiunga.
If opened, the initiative will generate good revenues to support local governments and also President Kenyatta's big four agenda.
The legislator further disclosed that Kenya as a country was losing several billions of shillings in form of revenues to unscrupulous businessmen who were in the habit of smuggling goods through illegal border points.
"County governments of Wajir, Garissa, and Mandera mostly depend on imports from the neighboring country of Somalia. By this, allowing easy movement of people and goods to the neighboring country, counties in northern Kenya will significantly flourish economically," stated Dahiye in a statement.
The Kenya-Somalia border was closed following increased cases of insecurity triggered by alleged Al-Shabaab insurgents whose major hideouts are in Somalia.
