The conflict between the two political heavyweights was rekindled on Sunday when Odinga linked the DP to the loss of billions meant for the construction of Arror and Kimwarer dams in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Speaking when he toured the area, the ODM boss further questioned the source of the huge amounts of money Ruto was donating in churches,  and concluded it could be proceeds of corruption.

However, in a quick rejoinder, the DP dismissed the allegations and accused Raila of being unconscious of development for opposing government projects meant to uplift Kenyans from abject poverty.

"You were against the Euro bond, SGR and now church contributions, but it is because you are the Lord of poverty. We will work day and night to ensure that your kingdom of poverty has no place in Kenya" the DP said on Monday during a function in Nyamira County.

Reacting to the sentiments, Mutunga, who served as the Chief Justice between 2011 and 2016, slammed both Uhuru and Ruto and their fellow leaders, accusing them of being the cause of poverty in the country.

"Indeed, the entire Kenyan ruling elite are the Lords of poverty," tweeted Mutunga on Monday.
