Across the world, people eat things you never imagined could cool the pains of hunger. What you consider unhealthy could be the best delicacy for others. This is the case at the coast as shown in this video. The Giriama and Chonyi of Kilifi County love a certain rodent.
The loved rodent is the 'kadzora'. Those who eat its meat confess that the rodent is one of the sweetest delicacies you will come across. This has made their hunting a normal thing among the locals.
Some residents have seen a business opportunity with the scarcity. They hunt kadzora and prepare them for sale. After hunting, the rodents are not skinned but specially roasted wholly. The sticks used to roast them are locally called 'pambo'.
However, locals complain about their fast decline. They have blamed those destroying their habitats that include forests and bushes for killing a natural source of food. This environmental change has made the rodents not be found all year round. Their population increases after harvest which is usually around August.
They are not alone in this special diet. Across the nation, different communities eat various things that include termites, mudfish, crickets and queen ant among others. We should join them to fight food insecurity.
