Among the counties that contribute to the large pool of athletes that represent Kenya in various races is Baringo County.
Baringo is one of the Rift Valley region counties popular for their production of men and women who bring Kenya the fame she enjoys on matters athletics.
However, the county has no notable sports facility and cannot boast of any notable stadium apart from the Kabarnet Stadium which is yet to stand after years of fund allocations.
The county government has for six years now attempted to construct a stadium at the site in futility and despite the project gobbling up Sh50. 5 million, nothing has been done.
Instead, the stadium ground remains in a derelict with contractors taking off leaving unfinished structures awaiting to collapse.
A good example is the perimeter wall which despite eating up Sh10 million so far remains unfinished. The pavilion and changing rooms are also a dream waiting to be realized.
According to Godfrey Kokoyo, a former Koibatem Athletics Society Secretary, the county should strive more to have a stadium.
"We cannot say we have a stadium. A lot needs to be done to realize the dream of having one that is up to standard,” he said while speaking to the media.
But according to county Education, Sports and Culture CEC, the situation is to blame on financial constraints and not county laxity.
He said that the amount allocated for the job was too little as the stadium would need a minimum of Ksh500 million to be in the required state.
Baringo County has given the nation some of her most successful athletes like former world champion Paul Tergat.
