After France beat Belgium on Tuesday to qualify for the World Cup finals, Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho took to social media to celebrate.
He expressed joy after the French team sailed through their European neighbours, saying: "Since reaching their first one in 1998, France have reached more World Cup finals than any other nation. Showpiece."
"WIN! @FrenchTeam are in the #WorldCupFinal!" he added through his Twitter account.
France edged Belgium in the semi-final in St Petersburg after defender Samuel Umtiti scored the winning goal for the 1998 champions in the second half with a towering header from Antoine Griezmann's corner.
Belgium had 64% possession in the match but France kept their shape, played on the counter-attack and constantly looked to forward Kylian Mbappe, who was a threat throughout with his darting runs.
Belgium came through the quarter-finals after impressively beating Brazil.
Twenty years ago, France won the World Cup for the first and only time in their history at ther Paris home with a 3-0 win over Brazil.
England will play Croatia at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia in the second semi-final on Wednesday, July 11.
The World Cup finals will take place at the same venue on Sunday, July 15.
