Northern Kenya is not being left out in the 2022 succession debate.

Several top politicians among them women from Garissa, Mandera, Isiolo, Marsabit, and Wajir are expected to hit headlines this year.

Here are 3 female politicians of Somali origin to watch out this year.

1. Sophia Abdi Noor 

The Ijara MP is among vocal Somali politicians in the country.

Abdi became the first Somali woman to win a political seat in North Eastern region in the 2017 general election.

The vocal legislator is vocal on matters women rights.

She is also an anti-Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) crusader.

In October last year, the Ijara MP bagged the Pride of Africa women award for championing women rights.

The MP is expected to continue his activist role in promoting women rights in northern Kenya and across the country.

2. Fatuma Gedi 

The Wajir Women Representative made headlines last year and is expected to shape North Eastern region politics this year.

Gedi will be among top female Somali politicians to watch.

The women rep is battling to clear her name over allegations that she facilitated bribes to some lawmakers to reject the report on contraband sugar.

Gedi’s name has also been featured in an unverified sex video that went viral on social media. 

The women rep distanced herself from the obscene video claiming that her detractors are out to taint her career.

3. Ilhan Omar

She is the 5th Representative of Minnesota District in the United States (US).

Omar, a former refugee at the Dadaab Refugee camp in Garissa was elected in November last year.

She became the first Somali Muslim woman to win the is not interested the US.

Omar has since been sworn in and became the first Somali woman to wear a hijab on the floor of the US House of Representatives.

The 36-year-old spent moth of her early years in Garissa after her family flees from the conflict-prone Somalia.

She is expected to spearhead women rights and reforms in the US, and the rest of the world.
